Songs About Sadness

A record for the rainy days, and for what gets you through them. Lauri wrote, sang and played every instrument himself, with Silja joining on two songs, in a studio full of old synthesizers, drums, guitars and assorted instruments.

Story

Two rooms

Lauri reading beneath the gilded columns of the National Library of Finland

By dayThe reading room

Lauri is a philosopher. He holds a PhD, leads the Applied Philosophy programme at Aalto University, writes books for Tammi and a column for Helsingin Sanomat.

The songs borrow from that world: questions about time, memory and how to stay human, written down in plain words.

By nightThe control room

From 1997 to 2004, music was his full-time job. He ran a studio, produced albums for other artists, played on Finnish number-one hits and conducted the musical Sagan om ringen at Svenska Teatern.

Since 2019 he has been back in the studio for his own records. He works hardware first: synthesizers, drum machines, piano, guitars, winds and whatever else is in reach.

Anything that can make a sound can make music.
